Strategic Dialogue #1: September 18-21

Reigniting the Poor People’s Campaign:
Finishing the Unfinished business of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

 

On September 18th, sixty people representing more than fifteen organizations gathered at Union Theological Seminary for the first Poverty Scholars Program Strategic Dialogue. 

Participants came from across the U.S. (Detroit, MI, Atlanta, GA, Charleston, WV, Philadelphia, PA, Wilkes Barre, PA, Ithaca, NY, New York City, NY and more).

Sessions focused on:

  • The history of the Poor People’s Campaign launched by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968
  • Poor people organizing today
  • Poverty and inequality
  • The art of new leadership and strategies for organizing

 

Sessions also included technical skills training on the use of blogs, the creation of and reflection on rituals to support organizing, and art and culture in the movement to end poverty.

Evening entertainment offered by the Union Brothers Singers from Haiti was a highlight of the gathering
