Event: Solidarity With Picture the Homeless

GenerationsPoverty Initiative representatives John and Myles Wessel-McCoy attended the March 19th Picture The Homeless action in East Harlem, NY. Not only was this the first street action for the Poverty Initiative's youngest member, the planned building takeover drew the support of over one hundred protesters.  Supporters included Right to the City and Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping.  For more info on this successful event and more check out the Picture The Homeless Blog.

From the Picture The Homeless Press Release:Veteran NYC Housing Organizers Chino and Jean Rice

El Barrio/East Harlem is full of vacant buildings and lots, which are owned by private landlords as well as the city, at the same time as rents—and homelessness—continue to climb. In fact, the borough of Manhattan contains enough vacant properties to house every homeless family in the city!
EL BARRIO SAYS ENOUGH.

John Wessel-McCoy works with the Poverty Initiative and is Myles's dad. Jean Rice is a board member of Picture the Homeless and Chino has been organizing in NYC around housing issues (East Harlem and Lower East Side) since the 1960's and was one of the inspirations for the formation of Picture The Homeless.
